The overall goals of this project are to delineate ethnic differences in the Complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) therapies used by rural elders and to determine ethnic differences in how these modalities are incorporated into health self-management. Role: Investigator

Melcher (PI).  Recreation Therapy Complementary Integrative Medicine - Qigong Therapy Project with Hospitalized Adolescents. The purpose of this project is to provide qigong program/exercises on an impatient child and adolescent behavioral health unit to introduce patients to an alternative method for coping with life stressors. The change in stress during this 35 minute qigong dose during a 45 minute recreational therapy session with be measured with pre and post dose Biodot readings during the recreational therapy session. 2008 February. Older Adults Fall Reduction: Biomechanically-based Taiji Intervention (R01 CE001444-0). Thurmond E. Lockhart, Principal Investigator.  Submitted to NCIPC/CDC, February 2008.  Score: 235.  Role: Co-investigator. This community trial will test the efficacy of two different forms of taiji instruction (solo training and partner training compared with a non-taiji control group) in improving gait and stability of female community-dwelling older adults, reducing their reported number of falls, reducing their fear of falling, and improving their mobility. .(This was a joint proposal submitted by the Virginia Tech of Blacksburg Virginia and Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center.  My involvement as a co-investigator was through Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center with Sara Quandt PhD and Tom Arcury PhD.)
